Monday Morning Blooms

Hello, and welcome to Panoply on this glorious Monday morning. It is a most special day, as I was invited to join my blogging friends for this June garden edition of Monday Morning Blooms!
Thank you Mary, Pam and Lidy for inviting me to join Monday Morning Blooms June Garden edition.
Since moving into our cottage home in October 2021, I have been nurturing the garden, plant by plant, bloom by bloom. The invitation to join the gals of Monday Morning Blooms gives me the opportunity to share some of my favorite blooms from my garden, as well as the opportunity to set a table to enjoy them!
Landscape gardening is in my bones, and has been for nearly forty years. My biggest project was a garden renovation we did in 2004 that resulted in a new hardscape / landscape design at our home. That landscape grew to maturity fourteen years later.  In 2019, we downsized to a city loft for two and a half years, breaking from gardening altogether (it was also part of the Covid years). That ultimately ignited a burning desire to get back into a house and garden - rightsizing into a smaller, more manageable property than our large home, but more spacious than the loft.

Today I've set a small table - commensurate with our current lifestyle - with a flower bouquet representing the final act of a beautiful array of spring blooms, before the heat of summer takes center stage. It's a table suited for two, and a bouquet primarily from my cottage size garden.
My floral arrangement began with a very small bouquet I purchased at our local Capitol Market, but the majority of blooms used ended up being my own. I've used a Blenko's iconic 384 water decanter as my vase today. Blenko Glass factory is part of West Virginia's industrial history, operating since 1921. The water decanter form you see here was first introduced in 1938, and still remains in production.
The flowers I used from the vendor include the tulips, stock, and ranunculus. Added to the mix from my own garden are purple bearded iris, peonies (four different varieties), yellow evening primrose, and love-in-a-mist (nigella). As you can see from the photos above and below, it takes viewing the vase from both sides to take in all varieties of the blooms used.
I tried the method of preserving my peony blooms in the fridge for the perfect timing of my bouquet. The method works beautifully, and each of mine opened fully within a day of cutting. To preserve your peonies, you simply cut the stem when the bloom is in the "marshmallow" stage of puffiness before the bloom opens. You then snip all the leaves off the flower. At this point, I individually wrapped each bloom in saran wrap, being careful to twist the ends to close. I then placed them in the refrigerator until ready to arrange in a bouquet.
Here are each of the selection of flowers from my garden used today, in situ:
Purple Bearded iris
Bartzella peony
Coral Sunset peony
Karl Rosenfield peony
Chestine Gowdy peony
Yellow evening primrose
Love-in-a-mist (nigella)
For the table, I chose preppy pink and green as my primary colorway. The tablecloth is one I've had for several years, and reminds me of a garden room with the trellis pattern. The napkin rings are in an espaliered vine pattern, something I'd love to try in the landscape some day. Have any of you tried espaliering?
My dish stack begins with my vintage and trusty Homer Laughlin Greenbrier china dinner plate. I used Juliska's classic Berry and Thread salad plate, and a SeaGlass inspired recycled glass appetizer from Viva Terra. I was sad to see Viva Terra discontinued this line before I could get a collection of it. The berry bowl is a MacKenzie-Childs ceramic, in collaboration with Katy McFarlan.
It was only after I had set my table and my blooms were waning when I was perusing our antique mall where my sisters and I rent booth spaces. I came upon the cutest little teapot that coordinated with my dishes - so inexpensive - and I brought that little teapot home! I can now say I added roses to my table.  😊
I hope you enjoyed your visit with me today. I was thrilled to be able to share my garden in this, my third year in this home. I look forward to continuing adding more perennial blooms to my cottage plot.
Now, enjoy more flower therapy with your hosts of Monday Morning Blooms, using the direct links to their respective posts below.

  1. Good Morning Rita, I love your pretty pink and green table! Such a happy color combination topped with your MacKenzie-Childs ceramic berry bowl! Your teapot find is such a sweet addition too. Love your combination of garden blooms mixed with your Capitol Market bouquet. You’re so smart to plan ahead and save your peony blooms. Every year I think I’m going to try it, but it means sacrificing the small, tighter buds on the same stems that won’t open and a peony bloom is a terrible thing to waste. 😊 You have such a wonderful variety of peonies. I want to plant a Chestine Gowdy peony…I bet the fragrance is wonderful! The trellis tablecloth is the perfect foundation of a garden table and I love your and green vine napkin rings. I’ve never tried espaliering, but we have a tall privacy fence that would be the perfect candidate for it.
As always, it’s a treat to join you at the table. We’re so happy to have you join us for some flower therapy today. I hope your birthday was a happy one and the celebration continues this week! πŸŒΈπŸ’—
P.S. Love seeing Baby J enjoying an impromptu tea party in her party outfit!

  2. Good morning, Rita. I love your pink and green table, reminds me of the iconic Lilly Pulitzer resort wear. The view from above of your table for two and beautiful array of spring blooms is stunning! Tulips, stock, and ranunculus from Capitol Market mixed with your garden blooms of purple bearded iris, peonies, yellow primrose, and nigella make a gorgeous arrangement. For the first time, I used the refrigerator method for preserving peonies and it worked. The four varieties of peonies that you are growing are beautiful. I also have Karl Rosenfield and love its color. The trelllis pattern of the tablecloth was an ideal choice for a garden table and a lovely dish stack. The sweet teapot you discovered at the antique mall was icing on the cake. The last photo of Baby J steals my heart. I just know you will plan many tea parties for the two of you. I have a tea party planned with my girls for this week! Rita, we are thrilled that you joined us for Monday Morning Blooms! It is always a pleasure to be invited to one of your curated tables. Happy Monday and wishing you more birthday fun this week!

The trellis pattern does remind me of a garden room and the vine napkin rings really compliments the table. Your garden is looking so fabulous. Lots of hard work has paid off. Love the peonies. I don’t have any, so I am enjoying yours. Baby J is the cutest sitting at your lovely table for a tea party. Happy June Rita.

  8. Rita, your garden is full of such beautiful blooms! It is always special when we use our own flowers for a centerpiece or by adding them to a purchased bouquet Thanks for the tips on how you control the bloom time by wrapping and putting them in the refrigerator. I planted my first peony here this spring. It seems to love its location and I plan to plant more if it does well. Such a pretty mix in the stack setting and it is incredibly lovely. You found a darling piece to bring home, the teapot is sweet and so is little baby J ready to enjoy a tea party. Oh what special times you two will enjoy......Happy June Rita.

I love your pink and green table, it is so fresh, and like Pam, it reminds me of the Lilly Pulitzer colors. Your bouquet of tulips, stock, and ranunculus from the market mixed with your garden flowers make such a gorgeous arrangement. The sweet teapot is the perfect find for this table, here’s wishing you many more fun tea parties with your adorable Baby J! What a sweet photo of her - she’s adorable. The best tea parties we have at our house include little girls dressed up in tulle and glitters too! Rita, thank you so much for joining us today for Monday Morning Blooms! 10. Goodness! Where does one start with this beautiful post? The entry photo alone took my breath away. Your flowers are stunning and the dish stack on the trellis table with the trellis napkin ring is all perfection. I have the berry bowls, so you have inspired me to find some pink in my dish stash and work on my own pink and green tablescape. You know I admire the way you use your collections together. Use the good stuff and mix it up is the best motto! I'm envious of your tea parties with that precious Miss J. She is adorable! Pack her up and come see me! I'd love to host a tea party! Happy first Monday in June.

The plate stack is so pretty with the pink and green color palette, and I love the MKC berry bowls and how the tablecloth and napkin rings complement each other. I adore the Pier 1 placemats too and the teapot is darling. The overhead shot of the flower arrangement is gorgeous and all the varieties of peonies are just stunning. 14. Rita, One of my favorite color combinations is pink and green. My everyday china when we first married 45 years ago, was pink, green and yellow. I love your tablescape. 15. My goodness, your table is outstanding! I love how you photographed your table and the collage shots are so creative! Every detail is perfection and your commentary is too! I love the variety of flowers and to have grown most of them is so rewarding! Your garden shots are wonderful! I am glad the refrigerator preservation method really works. If only, I could grow peonies I would be trying it!
So sweet to have Miss J all dressed in her dance attire to enjoy a tea party. That was a precious ending to your post.

  16. What gorgeous flowers, Rita. I'm a big fn of cottage gardens and love your choice of flowering plants. The bouquet was a delightful gathering of summer colors. Haven't tried the refrigeration method of preserving peonies but I definitely have it on my list for next year. Thanks for sharing.

  17. No matter what size garden you have you seem to make the most of it. Every picture above is stunning. I can't get over all of those peonies! My youngest seems to have the only green thumb in the family. The inside of her home is like a jungle but she lives in an apartment in Dallas. She adores flowers and recently started a pop-up DIY floral bouquet shop in her neighborhood. She's been quite successful and now hopes to quit her job and open a flower shop. I laugh and cry at that. I want her to love her career so it never feels like work but I cry at the several thousands of dollars spent for a college degree. Ayi yi yi. Thank you for sharing your beautiful garden and table. The colorful dishes are fantastic. If I were visiting I'd change into a costume as well and plop myself right up there. ;)

  18. Now this one is calling my name! I especially like the way you used the Blenko piece for all the beautiful flowers. The tablecloth looks like a cake platter my mother had which I now use. Little J is really cute, having her "tea"! Ellen Shook

  19. Rita you did good girl! I love your garden blooms and the peony/fridge idea has been our "go-to" for years when we lived in Kansas. I learned it from a peony farmer in Salina, Kansas (my home town)...We always put them in the bottom of the fridge...(some we kept for several weeks). We would then cover a mason jar with foil and put them in water to take to the cemeteries. I miss those days and I really miss the peony fragrances. Your sweet grand is adorable and I would frame that pic for sure. Happy June my friend and thanks for sharing your lovely Iris too.

  23. Your table and flowers are fabulous. I love the pinks and greens with the pops of purple and yellows in the bouquet and it's perfect in your Blenko. So, if I put the peonies in the refrigerator will the ants die (I can never get them out, even if I think I have so I never cut them to bring in). And what is "marshmallow stage"? You just rock it, Rita!

  24. Rita, your floral arrangements are beautiful! You have so many gorgeous blooms in your garden. The coral peonies are gorgeous! I adore any coral colored blooms. Your table setting is so pretty, and I can see why your beautiful granddaughter wanted to have a tea party. Happy June! Shannon@Belle Bleu Interiors
