Tales of the Traveling Tote #42 and Giveaway

Hello, readers, and welcome to Panoply! Today marks the 42nd instalment of the Tales of the Traveling Tote, can you believe it? It's all about quarterly tales of ladies connecting friendship and stories of our everyday lives via a MacKenzie-Childs tote we all purchased at one time or another.
To read more about the origin of this series of posts, you can learn how it started here. A link to all my previous tales can be found here

For me, this quarter's post is mostly miscellaneous musings, seeing as how we did not travel much, but rather hibernated in what turned out to be one of the most abominable winters in a very long time. I understand if you'd like to skip right over to my traveling sisters' travels, their links are further in this post. But, be sure to see the details on the giveaway!

I'll start by going back to December, the week of Christmas. It was a jolly good time, going out with my kids and a few of their close friends.
Then, 32 of my immediate family were hosted by my oldest daughter for Christmas Eve (several missing from the photo below. It's like herding cats).
And then 10 of us got covid within a few days of Christmas. Not bad cases, just a few days of more or less head colds.

Then January's snow and deep freeze hit. What our summer lacked in moisture, January more than made up for it.
A week after the first snowstorm, I stepped outside to assess garden damage, only to be greeted by what I thought was literally a war attack. Notice the smoke between the houses, and our capitol building's dome just beyond the roofline of the grey house on the right?
It was a 21-gun salute as part of the inauguration of our new governor. Scared the bejeebers out of me!

February wasn't much better than January. Utility bills peaked, as we trickled water in the garage sink, ran auxiliary heat, and layered on the clothes. This was Mr. P. just taking the garbage out on one of the subzero mornings.
Did you see the challenge on Facebook to go out in the snow and make a face plant? Lol, I challenged my girls. And they did it. 🤣🤣
Mr. P. was bound and determined to pre-order his new Samsung phone (his last one was 2017 and wouldn't update several apps he uses), so we trekked out for that. Check out the snowpile on the parking lot behind me. The photo on the right is the sales receipt of his purchase that day.
January and February were about self-care for me. I had a place on my nose that was basal cell, and I was trying to rid it without having it frozen by my dermatologist. I used Flourouracil for 3 weeks. Then I started using the Tretanoin for those little white bumps that look like whiteheads but are hard. Ouch! That stuff (prescription strength retinol) is strong! Clinique to the restorative rescue. I've always used the Dramatically Different Moisturizing Lotion, but added the Moisture Surge to my routine. Moisture Surge with spf 28 is my new best friend.
I am so ready to kick winter to the curb! That snow from January 6th was still stubbornly remaining on January 30th, both on the roof and ground.
I celebrate March 1 as the beginning of spring, no matter what. Two days ago I worked inside the house to put away everything winter that hints as winter decor, including a snowy tablescape that my little Miss J has been using as part of her props while acting out Beauty and the Beast in the dining room scene.
I am ready to get out in the garden for good. I've had a couple good days outside in February, winter pruning some plants until close to breaking dormancy (namely St. John's Wort, clematis, lavender, butterfly bushes, and crepe myrtle).
And maybe by the next time we post on our travels (June 1), I'll have actually made a trip or two. We shall see.

  1. Happy March Rita! I know you’re beyond ready to kick winter to the curb with all your snow and ready to welcome spring. I had to chuckle at Mr. P bundled up just to take the garbage out and your girls’ brave face plants in the snow. 🥶 We’ve had spring like temps here near 70. I always worry about premature budding when the temperature spikes so early as I know Mother Nature has plenty of winter left for us. Happy Saturday. ♥

  2. Hi Rita!! How wonderful to have such a large beautiful family. Ours is so small and I have often envied people with a large clan. As far as the white bumps go, I have had great success with the MEOLY treatment. Have a wonderful weekend. xx

  3. I'm sitting at the breakfast table reading your blog and watching our very hungry birds filling up on breakfast. Spring is on the way and the garden is starting to come back to life. I hadn't realized temps were so low where you live. Mr. P's picture gave a good idea of the cold. Trees are flowering here and so is allergy season but it's worth it to see the green coming back to the garden. Thanks for the catch-up.

  4. Happy March Rita. The winter has been brutal. Seeing Mr. P. All bundled up to take out the garbage shows the reality of the cold. Your girls are so fun with their face plants. Such a cute idea. Your family photos are so darling and Miss J is the cutest little. Cheers to an early spring.

  5. I'm putting away the last of winter today too. Time for it to go! Even without traveling you've had a remarkable few months. The time with family looks great (and I have to say now you look younger than some of your younger generation! Fabulous!) We heard all about your storm -- that one missed us but we made up for it later. We woke to snow today but it has stopped without too much of a dust, hopefully to stay. For us, March never FEELS like spring but I'm definitely ready to welcome it. I hope your garden has survived well.

  6. Oh wow, all that snow! I had a good chuckle at Paul having to dress in layers to take the garbage out! I didn't realize you were so close to your capital, bet the gun salute did scare you. I love how you have a big family and I love how you described rounding them up for a photo, like cats :) Cute snow faces and I'm happy you've found a solution to your spots without using the dermatologist. I"m taking notes on your routine. And, my gosh, you could go without any makeup, you are just beautiful! I am removing all winter scenes here this weekend, enough. Winter was brutal here too, a little snow but the temps really got to us. Waiting to see how much damage to my plants! Happy March sweet Rita.......

  7. Happy March! Loved seeing the greens peeking through (we have too much snow to even think of that!). Don't you just love the moisture surge - it feels so good!! (I use fluorourocil quite often, too). Love the family photo - gotta take those pics when you can! Enjoy spring!

  8. Oh my goodness you really did have A LOT of snow!! It was nice seeing you and your family and little Miss J. I did not know about fluorourcil, but I’m glad it worked and that moisture surge did wonders. I know you’re so ready to get out and do some magic in your garden, Rita. Happy March!

  9. Happy March! Looking forward to the greatest gain in daylight of the entire year that takes place this month. I have one small patch of green in my garden to look at LOL, and only because I shoveled the area to take a peek at my Lenten Rose that always bloom around Lent. We shall see if that happens this year :-) I did not know about fluorourocil but glad it worked and you have a moisturizer that did wonders. Enjoy spring!

  10. Hi Rita, so nice to catch up with your winter happenings. I tend to find snowy photographs more enjoyable than snowy weather, haha! We had more colder-than-usual winter days this year but it is currently 77 and I've been working on some garden clean up projects. Wonderful to see your beautiful family!

  11. I am ready for winter to leave too. We almost hit 70 yesterday but now we are back to reality today with it down in the 30's. Excited for the girlfriend party tonight. Let's hope as we begin March we will begin to steadily go up in temperature. Have a wonderful weekend. Hugs. Kris

  12. Oh Rita...I can understand the tiresome snow...reminds me of Kansas winters. Speaking of Kansas, what a season we have had in our basketball endeavors. Never seen it so bad but I will never give up on them altho I feel I am cheering for a high school team rather than college players. Most of them better kiss any hopes of the NBA good-bye. LOL Your sweet grand seems to be in her own little world....those were the days huh? the innocence of it all. I do love your last pic with the daffodils popping through promising for a glorious yellow spring. Have a beautiful March my friend...and promises of a great new season for the Mountaineers and Jayhawks.

  13. Hi Rita, December looked fun with your girls’ friends and then your large family celebrating Christmas. With all of your snow, I don’t blame you for staying in. Love that photo of you. We have never had to deal with snow. It is actually a rare event. We have had a nice week, but today the wind has kicked up and we will be below freezing tonight. In my mind I have proclaimed spring that spring has begun on this first day of March. J reminds me of my girls, they love to play dress up as Belle, Snow White, etc. Enjoy every moment. Yay, let’s get on to gardening!

  14. We've been harvesting daffodils for the past 2 months between the below-zero temperatures. As with anywhere else, the weather has had its challenges. We got 3 inches of snow in mid January. It didn't thaw quickly because of the frigid temps. I'm glad to see your bulbs are getting the message that spring is on the way.

  15. Rita, love seeing your large family! How nice that you can and do all get together. It takes effort! Like you, I'm definitely ready to see winter move on. We didn't have the severe, lengthy snows you had to deal with, but the super cold weather here had me wondering when we might move on. Finally, we've had a break. I've even see a few signs of new growth. Welcome spring!!!

  16. It's easier to get rid of white bumps by just poking then with a needle.

    1. Ouch! I cannot lie - I have done that before, but wouldn't recommend it! It can leave scars and/or extended red blotchiness on skin.

  17. Spring keeps teasing us, it was 70 degrees yesterday and tonight will be in the 20s! But we didn't have the joy of getting snow.

  18. Y'all have really had the craziest weather this winter. I'm glad all the snow has gone! I think it's so special you have a large family, but I hate that some of y'all got sick. I don't think you told me about your basal cell...OMGOODNESS! Is everything back to normal? I love moisture surge. I used to do the whole Clinique three step, but they changed the formula of the Dramatically Different Moisture Lotion a few years ago, and I had to drop that part. Happy Mardi Gras!

  19. There is no way I could live in all that cold weather. You are a trooper! So cute, Little Miss acting out the dining scene of Beauty and the Beast. Our bulbs are coming up too! Ellen Shook

  20. Just catching up here! Those faceplants are so funny. I am going to have to challenge the grands to do that, but this year we really haven't had any snow - not good as our water for the summer depends on snow in the mountains. But I have enjoyed not driving in it.
Looks like Christmas was quite the celebration. She is so brave! Always the best to get together though!

  21. I envy people with large families. Mine is painfully small. It’s sad, really. So many people have died off. I also envy that tote bag. It gets around more than I do. :-)

  22. I always enjoy reading your posts and about your adventures. You have had some winter but now its good to see that last patch of snow, which is probably gone now. Spring is on its way and soon we will be out in the garden again!
