Hello, readers, and welcome to Panoply! Happy September, the meteorological start of fall! Of course, the seasons as we know them follow the astronomical equinoxes and earth's orbit, but the notable climate changes generally fall by three month periods on the calendar (starting Dec-Feb for winter, etc); hence, meteorologically, it's fall, y'all!
Today marks the 44th instalment of the Tales of the Traveling Tote, can you believe it? It's all about quarterly tales of ladies connecting friendship and stories of our everyday lives via a MacKenzie-Childs tote we all purchased at one time or another.
To read more about the origin of this series of posts, you can learn how it started here. A link to all my previous tales can be found here.
My summer has been somewhat quiet insofar as travel (other than local) is concerned. In June, my high school graduating class of 1975 celebrated its 50th reunion here in my hometown. It was absolutely the best reunion our class has ever had! We had about a 50% turnout of our living classmates, with folks traveling from states including Washington, Colorado, Arizona and Texas, all back home in Almost Heaven, West Virginia. The throne group picture was a tongue-in-cheek move on the fact that our class never had a senior yearbook published (long story), and I was the Homecoming Queen back then.
Growing up in the parochial school system, it was notable that my grade school had the best representation at the reunion. Our grade school was grades 1 through 8, and high school 9-12. I went through all my school years with the folks pictured below. One really cool thing as a result of our reunion is that we're going to try to get together for dinner at a designated restaurant each month for locals and whoever may be in town from afar. We had our first dinner in August, and went Mexican, Two classmates celebrated birthdays, which was a lot of fun.
I've stayed busy in the garden this year, and in July, my girlfriend and I ventured to West Virginia's Blenko Glass for a specific item I was looking to buy for the garden. In the Visitors' Center, you can often find seconds of any production line item for nearly half the cost of firsts, so that was my goal.
Blenko artisans reintroduced their garden stakes, and they make beautiful, sun-catching decor to tuck into the garden. In the top half of the photo below is their 2025 color wheel of choices, and the lower half are what I now have in my own collection.
Here they are in the garden, placed beneath a piece of art glass a friend of mine made a few years ago.
The funny thing about these garden stakes is I already owned two (the topaz ones). I had used them in my Christmas decor in 2022 as Christmas trees on a bookcase shelf vignette. This year the Capitol Market was entered into the National Register of Historic Places!
I love supporting the vendors at the Capitol Market, both indoors and outside. It's where my girlfriends' and my favorite restaurant is, it's where I buy a lot of my annual flowers for my landscape, and it's also the best place to buy fresh produce from June through October. It's open year round, but the outdoor vendors only sell from April through December.
Guess who turned 4 in mid-August? Jacqueline! She had an Elsa (Frozen) themed pool party with eight friends, all of whom wore floaties or vests (except you know who). Look at this kid blast down the slides! Blast it was, and Mimi loved it too. J's bathing suit was even Elsa-themed.
Here's a montage of photos of her I have from the past year. She lights up our lives. This year I signed up for a local farm's four-week flower bouquet subscription at the Capitol Market, beginning in mid-August. Their farm is located in Spencer, WV - The Muddy Mountain Flower Farm. My first subscription bouquet included peaches and cream & blizzard dahlias, lemon basil, pink gomphrena, hot pink celosia, lisianthus, zinnia, sunflower. Pick up at the Capitol Market is super convenient.
The bouquet below was picked up on August 29, week 3 of my subscription. I love the fall look!
And let me just say this......my blog friend Mary has been preaching the benefits of using Crowning Glory for preserving floral bouquets for years. I finally bought some this year (go to her link shared here to find it). That stuff really works! I've had bouquets of sunflowers for almost two weeks now, and they still look fresh!
Just this past week, Mr. P. and I, along with two of my siblings and their partners, drove about an hour north near Clay, WV to journey on the WV Rail Explorers on the Elk River. If you follow along with my tribe sisters' blogs, you may remember that Linda took this rail trip in Amador, CA two years ago and wrote about it here. There are currently six locations where these Rail Explorers are set up.
The trip in WV along the Elk River follows the tracks of what was previously BC&G Railroad (Buffalo Creek & Gauley), operated from 1904-1965 as the Elk River Coal and Lumber Company (ELRICO). The B&O Railroad ran parallel to this rail. It was a coal town, where families lived and worked in encampments all along the rail, and shopping was, for the most part, conducted in the company store.
The trip was a perfect weather day, our first break in the summer temperatures with a morning low of 65° and high temperature of 80°, with sunny skies and a nice breeze. The ride goes one hour each way, with a short break at the halfway mark. All ages can participate with very little energy needed, as the rail cars are battery-driven. Highly recommended if you are ever traveling near one of these six (CA, IA, KY, NY, RI, and WV).

We thought of you on our way through Charleston to Ohio. We drive straight through these days, so there's no stopping on the way. I always enjoy your trip to Blenko glass. I didn't think Blenko was still in business. I don't know why I thought that, though. The garden stakes are very pretty. I know Katie would love one of those! Or maybe a half dozen! I hope all is well with you! Take care!
ReplyDeleteOne of these days we just have to get back to Charleston, and this time maybe I'll remember you live there! We can have lunch and shop at Capitol Market, what a great place.
ReplyDeleteI enjoyed my time with your travels, Rita! Look at you as the formerly Homecoming Queen in the courtly chair. My parochial high school didn’t have a yearbook either. Your Blenko glass garden stakes are so colorful. I do love the idea of a bouquet subscription and your Fall one is stunning. How gun to go on the rail explorer, too. Miss Jacqueline’s montage of the last year was adorable.
ReplyDeleteGood morning, Rita. I enjoyed reading your post, especially the high school reunion. I am not surprised you were the homecoming queen. My class of almost 500 celebrated our 50th reunion three years ago. I love the Blenko garden stakes! How can your adorable Jacqueline be four years old?? Little girls are so much fun. Enjoy every minute, before you know it she will be 9! Happy September and Labor Day!
ReplyDeleteOh J is just full of expression and curiosity - what a cutie-patootie! Reunions are so much fun - love how you will continue to keep in touch. I envy you living so close to Blenko, what a fun place to visit! And that peddling railway ride looks like fun - thanks for sharing your summer with us
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to catch-up with our friends from HS, looks like this was a fun reunion.Someone who lives here with me just celebrated his 60th!! I just love your Blenko garden stakes collection. Great idea to add sparkle to holiday vignettes and use as Christmas trees. Jacquline looks like she enjoyed that slide! I'm sure she keeps everyone on the run too. I think your rail excursion must have so enjoyable. Looks like a fun packed summer!
ReplyDeleteJ is so adorable, especially when she strikes a pose! I love the photo with the MKC bag on her arm. So glad that you had a great reunion and that you made plans to get together on a regular basis. I would love to visit Blenko Glass and the garden stakes are the perfect addition to the beautiful garden you have so lovingly nurtured. Love the flowers you received iwth your subscription! By the way, I have been using Mary's Crowning Glory for several years and it truly is magic, and makes a great gift too :) Happy Fall Rita!

Rita, how fun to celebrate your high school’s 50th reunion. Of course you were the homecoming queen. Special memories. The blenko glass looks lovely. Your garden stakes are so colorful and look fabulous in your garden. So glad you and Will had the opportunity to ride the rail explorers. Thank you for sharing my link. We enjoyed the rail ride and went again this year with my great-granddaughter Lilly. Your little J is such a cutie. Enjoy those sweet times with her.
ReplyDeleteRita, As hot as it was this summer, we stayed close to home as well. We have a trip planned in October to the Smokies. I'm looking forward to it as we are meeting my lifelong friend and her husband for a few days. Your reunion looks like it was fun. Miss J is an absolute doll with lots of cute expressions! She's a people person. That's a good asset to have. Her picture montage was great! The rail ride looks enjoyable. Your Blenko trip was successful. Love the colorful stakes! Your floral bouquets are beautiful, especially that last one! It's stunning! It sounds like your Capitol Market is a big hit! It's so nice to have a place to go for fresh vegetables, flowers and handmade crafts. Enjoy your Labor Day! Clara❤️
ReplyDeleteRita, how fun to celebrate your 50th high school reunion with so many of your classmates. I had to smile. 75 was the year Monnie and I married. Love seeing inside Blenko too. One of my favorite wedding gifts is a Blenko double spouted water pitcher. Beautiful garden stakes! Precious Jacqueline is 4? Time flies and they grow up all too quickly. I know you cherish every moment with this child. She is so fourtunate to have you present in her life. Happy autumn!
ReplyDeleteWell, Rita, you know I love all glass art and really need to explore Blenko someday. You have made Charleston move to the top of my wish list as I love your posts about local adventures and, of course, shopping!
ReplyDeleteI hope you make WV a stop some day! The state is small enough that you should be sure to include the New River Gorge National Park (Fayetteville) and Greenbrier (White Sulphur Springs / Lewisburg) as part of your stops! And, of course, Blenko!
DeleteLittle J is so cute. Hard to believe how big she is getting. You can really see her personality come out in the pictures. The capital Market looks like a great place. Wow your reunion is pretty awesome that many showed up. Of course you were the homecoming queen lol! Terry and I graduated in 1976 the bicentennial. Our reunions are not as popular. I think so many have moved out of state. Happy Labor Day. Have a great week. Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteRita "...oh what can it mean... to a daydream believer and a homecoming queen...." Sorry but that was the song that popped into my head when I saw you and your class mates 50th reunion picture. I loved everything you posted...the lovely garden stakes (my birthstone is topaz, so really loved them)...and your sweet grand's montage. I watched it a couple times just because she is so cute. It is hard to believe that we are into September already, yet here we are and your Fall bouquet is so pretty. I am sure the rail explorers was a beautiful trip, WV is beautiful....which of course makes me think of another song..."take me home country roads..." which is what one of our friends at church was singing to the Captain and me when the Mountaineers beat the Jayhawks earlier. Hugs and Blessings dear friend.๐ฅฐ๐๐ป❤️
ReplyDeleteThose garden stakes are fantastic! And you have just the garden to show them off! I have a feeling the the capital city market would be a VERY bad spot for me to be! It looks like they have so much! Little J has grown so much. I know you are having the most fun with her -- she's absolutely adorable! What a fun post!
ReplyDeleteHappy Meteorological Fall Rita! Great photos of you and your classmates, and fun continue to meet monthly. I would love to have a Capitol Market or similar nearby for garden flowers, shopping, dining and a subscription bouquet. Love the summer and early fall bouquet with your sunflower. So glad you are a CG convert now, it’s a miracle product, isn’t it? I adore the photo montage of Jacqueline, I think I watched that loop 10 times. ๐ Her personality shines through those pics. Your railway trip looks like fun, I remember Linda’s but didn’t realize they have multiple locations. You won the weather lottery with your excursion. Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow. ๐ฝ️๐งก
ReplyDeleteWell I guess I can no longer call her Sweet Baby J! Wow, I can't believe she is four! I love her little personality. She is the very cutes! :D You have had a wonderful summer, and I think it's fun you will get together more often with your local classmates. Your glass pieces are gorgeous, and they really are a pretty focal point in your garden. I also enjoyed seeing your garden post before this one. Your garden is so pretty!
