Hello, readers, and welcome to Panoply! Today marks the 43rd instalment of the Tales of the Traveling Tote, can you believe it? It's all about quarterly tales of ladies connecting friendship and stories of our everyday lives via a MacKenzie-Childs tote we all purchased at one time or another. To read more about the origin of this series of posts, you can learn how it started here. A link to all my previous tales can be found here.
It's been a very busy spring! In mid-March, the sister who we moved from SC this past November had knee replacement surgery, and one local sister, brother and I rotated in visits and getting her to physical therapy. I'm happy to say she's done great, and has now been discharged by her Doctor to carry on with normal activities (which has been very sedentary to this point, soon to change, we hope!).

In early April, Mr. P. and I drove to Bristol, TN to meet with a few college friends (from 56 years ago!), to have dinner and celebrate their Economic professor who was responsible for steering these young men into very successful career paths. Mr. P. and the taller guy to his right were also on the basketball team. Mr. P. and the fellow with glasses went on to Virginia Tech together for their doctoral work.

Mid April was a very special celebration of my brother next in line to me, who turned 70. His companion planned a surprise party for him at his home (!). All eight of my siblings came to town! This is the first time we've all been together since our Mom died in 2007.

The photo below is all of us, in birth order, youngest to oldest L to R. My brother is still wearing a baseball cap, still a NY Yankees fan. 🙂 The sister with the knee replacement is second from right.

Someone then took a photo of all of us with our spouses (and my brother's companion). As we are ALL getting older, this photo and this occasion will hold special memories for all of us.

Other birthdays celebrated in April included my girlfriend below on the left.
And later in April, my high school girlfriends who lunch together celebrated our January and April birthdays. Due to crazy weather and crazier schedules, both kept us from getting together sooner.

Easter was rather low-key, as my oldest daughter and son-in-law were on vacation, and my younger daughter's husband was working. So Mr. P. and I had dinner for my daughter and J.
Little J comes over when her Mommy & Daddy's work schedules have gaps in coverage. Right after Easter we played one late afternoon. I found a vintage doll baby that she quickly adopted as her own, and was quick to find herself a baby carrier.
J has been taking gymnastics lessons for two years, and this year was her first time participating in a showcase of "Gym Stars". She won a first place medal for successfully listening and performing beginner skills on the mat (forward roll, cartwheel), bar (pullup and pullover), and balance beam (arabesque and straddle jump dismount). The girl loves "nastics", as she calls it.
Early May, we celebrated the 50th wedding anniversary of my oldest daughter's in-laws.
A week later we celebrated the graduation of my oldest daughter's Masters degree and national certification as a Licensed Professional Counselor. 🥳🥳The ceremony was early morning, and it was Mother's Day weekend, so we all had lunch together after the graduation event.
The weekend after Mother's Day we traveled to Lost Creek, WV for a family wedding. This was also my sister Mary's 81st birthday, just a few days after being medically released from knee replacement. The bride was her granddaughter. It was a beautiful ceremony and reception, and we were happy to be part of that special day. She is pictured below in the navy blue dress, flanked by me and my local Panoply sister.
The last weekend of May was our city's "FestivALL: the city becomes a work of art". Saturday's events included a children's art fair and artisan fair. I spent time with my kids, especially enjoying all the fun J had. I also bought a couple pieces from artisans.
I cannot do a post in the months of March through May without a mention of my garden. These are the busiest months in the garden, by far. I've amended the section of grass where a pin oak was removed four years ago where the earth had sunken. That's like watching paint dry, but it's coming along. Below is 35 days in between: April 17-May 22. It still hasn't been fully mowed yet, just trimmed with the weed eater while it fills in.
Below is a collage of the majority of my perennials I've been planting and nurturing over the past four years, and which have bloomed so far in 2025.

Wow lots of family events and big congrats. What beautiful birthdays and graduation events. Little J is so so cute. Love Mommy and daughter matching dresses. Have a wonderful new week ahead. Hugs. Kris
ReplyDeleteThat luggage tag isn't a good choice for a giveaway, so small and looks more like a cat toy made in China. It would be more fitting to have a giveaway that folks could use like a Walmart or Amazon gift card.
ReplyDeleteDear Anonymous, since you chose to comment with no name, I cannot reply to you directly. It is just as well, as anyone who reads your comment should also understand my reply. Our intention is giving a TOKEN gift, something related to the MacKenzie-Childs brand. It is not intended to fulfill what one may suggest is their entitled gift. We feel fairly certain someone will appreciate the luggage tag, whether it's for a suitcase, backpack or carry on tote. Thanks for your visit and comment, and i hope you have a happy June.

ReplyDeleteGood morning, Rita. Wow what a busy three months you have enjoyed. I loved seeing all of your family photos, especially the one with all of your siblings. Congrats to your daughter on her master’s degree. J is a doll and being a grandmother is the best. My girls are taking gymnastics this summer. I always love seeing your garden with its beautiful blooms. Happy June, my friend!
ReplyDeleteRita, this post is so full of love! How special that all of the siblings reunited. Great family photo! I so miss my sister. Siblings are lifetime close friends. Keep celebrating!
ReplyDeleteMiss J is growing and as cute as ever! Love her choice of baby carrier. I also noticed that cute cocktail bag. I use mine for special occasions.
Of course I love your garden update. I've been cleaning up after our severe storm Wednesday evening. I was lucky! Only lost large limbs. That hurts, but at least the trees are still standing. Many in the neighborhood are totally destroyed.
Happy June!
Rita, you've had such a busy happy celebratory spring with weddings, graduation and family! I think is must be wonderful to have a big family, I love how you support one another, very special indeed. Sweet little J is adorable, love seeing how she enjoys gymnastics. And, the adorable pic with her doll and MC "baby carrier. Great family photos, to be treasured by all of you and future generations. Happy June dear Rita............
ReplyDeleteSo many wonderful gatherings and celebrations to enjoy. You've had a very busy spring season. It's wonderful that all your siblings could come together at the same time. We are spread over two countries and it's difficult to pull everyone together for a face to face visit. Love the garden update. Everything looks wonderful and your flowers are gorgeous. Have a lovely week.

ReplyDeleteSo much family and friend celebrations for you! What a beautiful large family! I love seeing large families. So great to get together and commemorate it with these great photos!
ReplyDeleteI had to smile at the doll carrier - that girl has taste!
Your yard and garden are coming along great. So many gorgeous flowers. I was frantically trying to plant my garden before I left on all of our trips because it would be too hot when I returned and sure enough it was 89 yesterday!
Congratulations on all your perennials blooming! You have a wonderful family.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much, Jo Ann! Thanks for stopping by!
DeleteWow Rita...so much goodness in this post...FAMILY and class reunions...two of my very favorite things!! Glad you grabbed all the photos and shared them. My HS class will soon be celebrating our 55th class reunion. We have had one every 5 years since we graduated and we always have a great turnout. I will say, we have had several classmates who have passed, so we always do a very special memory portion in our reunions. Also, gathering with siblings and taking photos are so important. I loss my youngest brother this past Christmas day and I am extremely thankful for all of the pictures that our family took as we celebrated a week before Christmas day. So glad that I dropped by your blog...Very uplifting and I certainly appreciate this when reading any blogs...Have a beautiful Sunday.
ReplyDeleteThis is such a full, rich post and those memories of family and friends, love and joy, are what make it so. I can feel the love and happiness in your voice as you write about these special people and times. (Little J is getting so big!) I loved every bit of this!
ReplyDeleteYou have been so busy! I know you are so proud of your daughters: They are both rockstars! They work so hard with work, school, and family life. I also enjoy seeing Baby J in all her cuteness. You have a large family: You are so blessed with so many siblings! I know you will treasure the photos of all of y'all together.
ReplyDeleteIt's always fun to see your mad gardening skills. You have such a gorgeous garden, and everything seems to be thriving in spite of all the crazy weather (unseasonable cold in winter and spring storms).
Thanks for hosting our giveaway! I had to edit my post because I thought Patti was hosting. I got confused, lol.
Wow Rita, you have been so busy. Love seeing the family photos. Such a large family makes for a lovely photo together. Treasured memories. Kudos to your daughters. Little J is the cutest little gymnast. So fun to see her enjoying this wonderful sport. Your gardens look so pretty. Lots of hard work there.
ReplyDeleteRita, I knew you had sisters but I wasn’t aware of such a large family you came from. It’s so inspiring to see how you all made the effort to be together for all the different occasions. Mr. Cottage’s family is scattered all the USA. Including him there are six in his family. I enjoyed seeing all your photos and especially seeing how much J has grown up! She’s precious! I wish they didn’t grow so fast. We just returned from TX where our oldest granddaughter graduated from Texas Tech University and the next day her brother graduated from HS. So much has happened this year that I haven’t been able to write about in my blog. I’m hoping to get back into working on my blog fairly soon. I look forward to reading yours.
ReplyDeleteI love that sweet little J used your MKC tote for a baby carrier! She has good taste!
ReplyDeleteYour Spring was loaded with special family and friends events~ so many great photos and memories made. Your hard work in your garden definitely shows, you are the energizer bunny! Happy June Rita~
Jenna
PS, I love your reply to that snarky comment from anonymous!
I loved seeing all your photos from the past few months, Rita. It really helps us connect with each other when we see one another’s friends and family and their events and activities. Congratulations to your oldest daughter in getting her Masters degree. Little J looks like your mini me and is so creative in her baby carrier. How great she’s doing in her gymnastics class! I know you’re so proud. Your yard and garden are looking amazing. All your hard work is paying off. Happy June, Rita!
