A Christmas Home Tablescape

Welcome, readers! Today I'm inviting you to join me in celebrating table design for the Christmas season. In decorating my home, tablescaping has become an integral part of my decor, and my Christmas tablescape was the first thing I did in preparing my home for the holidays. Simply stated, it's "A Christmas Home Tablescape".

The inspiration for my tablescape began with vintage finds, which should come as no surprise to frequent readers of my blog. Being an antique and vintage wares dealer in a local antique mall affords me the benefit of fostering finds before deciding to sell them. Such was the case with the French crystal ruby red goblets on the table. 

Additionally, a good friend gifted me dinner and salad plates in the Ridgway of Staffordshire "Windsor" pattern from her mother-in-law's estate late last winter, of which I used the dinner plates here. I sourced the Royal Stafford "Christmas Home" salad plates and tartan chargers in after-Christmas sales last year, online. 

I recently purchased the tablecloth(s) when I saw one in both round and oblong sizing, as I have both size tables. Once the plate stacks were set on the table, I knew I wanted another layer - a solid - to break between the plate patterns and the tablecloth pattern. My ivory velvet placemats worked. Red became my accent with flatware and napkins, to go along with the red crystal.

The deer in forest glitter globe was an estate sale find - new in box - during summer. It was originally sold by Cracker Barrel. I already had a set of four brass deer, so I started leaning into thoughts of using both as part of the dining room decor for Christmas. That's when I put my reindeer sleigh napkin rings to use.

The  jeweled trees, smaller brass deer, and glitter globe became my centerpiece. The globe is the only way I like glitter - contained! The larger of my brass deer were placed on the fireplace ledge with greenery and lights.

Last year I styled my entire dining room around nutcrackers, and this year I didn't even bring them out. Instead, I worked the bookcase with a few other vintage finds.

In fact, the only things not vintage, estate sale finds on this bookcase are the clock (a wedding present), the ornaments on the second shelf, and my nativity on the third shelf. I love the "Light of the World" tiny framed print of Jesus on the top shelf. 

The small landscapes on the bottom shelf are hand-painted Wheeling Cushion tiles (1913-1960) of winter scenes, and the bottle brush trees in red wooden pots date from the 1950s.

As mentioned early in this post, my table was the first decorating I did for Christmas. I finished decorating the tree and everything else on the Monday after Thanksgiving. The view above is looking from the dining room toward the family room. Mr. P. was watching television when I took the photo, so you also get its reflection from the wall opposite the bookcase. #reallife

You can see glimpses of the bookcase in the family room, where I decorated mostly with Santas (thinking of 2 year old granddaughter Jacqueline's visits). Below is a collage of the great room vignettes.

The main tree is in the dining room, visible from most angles throughout the house's main level. 

Funny side note: we have a brass mail slot in our 1938 home's original door. My tree lights are connected to a whistle switch from the 1970s, a very low-tech thing. Each time the mailman opens the slot and drops mail, the high pitch of the slamming of the brass slot kicks on (or off) the tree lights. 

Lights elsewhere are mostly on timers, including the table, candles, a few trees and bookcase shelves.

There is no place I'd rather be than home for Christmas. Lucky for me, I still live in the town where my eight siblings and I grew up. From 2005 to 2018, Mr. P. and I hosted all of my family who could make it home on Christmas Eve, with nearly 40 one year. My oldest daughter has taken on the task since 2019 (except for the year we all stayed home). I now only host Christmas breakfast for my daughters, their spouses, and my granddaughter, but I love the season and making my home a welcome place to be.
