Hello, readers, and welcome to Panoply! Today marks the 41st instalment of the Tales of the Traveling Tote, can you believe it? That's over ten years of quarterly tales of ladies connecting friendship and stories of our everyday lives via a MacKenzie-Childs tote we all purchased at one time or another.
If you're not familiar with the concept behind this series of posts, you can read how it started here. A link to all my previous tales can be found here.
Our fall has been a hectic one! Mr. P. and I took just a couple of small trips - one day trip and one overnight - during September and October. September was our day trip, to enjoy the fall landscape in West Virginia. We are the only state entirely within the Appalachian Mountain range. One of our favorite places to go is the New River Gorge National Park and Preserve.
After a brunch at the Cathedral Cafe in Fayetteville, WV - a church-turned-restaurant - Mr. P., my brothe,r and his companion headed out for a hike to view the New River Bridge from up high.
The Old Grist Mill at nearby Babcock State Park is always a picturesque location, and gives reason to the state's motto: Almost Heaven, West Virginia. In October, Mr. P. and I traveled to Morgantown, WV to watch WVU play my alma mater, the University of Charleston (WV), in an exhibition game at the basketball coliseum. In mid-October, my girlfriend and I went to our Capital Market to shop juried artisans' wares at FestivALL Fall. I picked a favorite photographer's shot he had taken of the New River Gorge Bridge under the light of the Aurora Borealis just a few days prior to the fair.In late October, we planned an outing to our Light Opera Guild's production of Beauty and the Beast. Unfortunately, Jacqueline's mama contracted walking pneumonia and was too sick to go, but Jacqueline had so much fun with her newest friend, C. They were extremely attentive the entire show!Of course, Halloween followed a few short days later. I was home. passing out candy, while J and her friends had a blast trick-or-treating. Pretty much every day is costume day with J.
November has been a total blitz for me. My local sister Marcie and I worked almost the entire month, preparing for moving another sister from South Carolina back to West Virginia after her 28 year residency there. First we readied her apartment here at home. We then spent a week in South Carolina, purging and packing, and hired one-way movers to transport all her things, including her car, while she rode back with Marcie and me.
Suffice it to say it was a loooong road traveled to get from there to here, but the task is complete, for the most part. We are still organizing her in her new apartment, but our focus will shift back to our own households through the holidays. Back in September, I had reserved a slot with my oldest daughter for a sell-out wreath-making workshop at the Capitol Market. The next evening upon returning from South Carolina, I participated in that, running on fumes. First, we had dinner, where J and her mama joined us.Then, onto the workshop with my other daughter and her girlfriend. We had a lot of fun, and it definitely was the shot of holiday spirit I needed after the monumental move.
So yea, this is pretty much my only Christmas decoration (besides a fun tablescape that's coming to you on Tuesday!) that I have set in my home and garden right now.

Merry December Rita! You and your sisters have been busy. An intown or city move is a monumental task much less moving several states away. I know your sister appreciates the help and support as packing and purging is so overwhelming. Love the photos of J, such a cutie! She’s at that fun age for all the holidays. Cute photo of you on the truck tailgate too. The wreath making class looks like lots of fun and I love the dried orange slices with the brown of the magnolia leaves. We were out of town for a week to visit family for Thanksgiving which always puts me behind when Thanksgiving is late. Keep Calm and Decorate On 🎄
ReplyDeleteYour "tree" looks lovely...lol! I love the wreath you made...complete with dried orange slices! Your sister's move from SC was a long one, and you are probably glad to have her in the neighborhood. Happy Thanksgiving, and best wishes to all!
ReplyDeleteRita, you are a gem of a sister. Your task was monumental but thankfully you now have time to breathe. Your trips look perfect. Hikes, fresh air, and beautiful scenery is good for the soul. J is adorable, I love that she plays dress-up every day, she has a wonderful imagination. I enjoyed reading about your busy life over the past three months. Merry December!
ReplyDeleteHi Rita, I loved seeing the Almost Heaven, West Virginia on your Fall hike!! I love Fall festivals and the photo you bought is beautiful. Little J is such a doll, I love all her cute outfits! Moving is not for sissies, I know your sister really appreciates all your hard work...I know it wasn't easy~ The wreath you made is beautiful! Happy December!

Rita, wow, you and your sisters have been quite busy. Such a huge task packing, purging and traveling such a long way to help your sister. Hopefully you can rest a little and enjoy Christmas. Little J is such a cutie. I love that she wants to dress up everyday. Enjoy those precious moments. They grow up fast. The wreath making class looks like great fun. I love how it turned out.You look so cute sitting on the tailgate holding the Aurora Borealis photo. Fun times traveling with Mr. P. Merry Christmas 🎄 Rita.
ReplyDeleteBusy gal!! Your outings looked like fun and I am sure you are happy to have your sister near by! J is darling - grandchildren keep us hopping and young, right? Your wreath is lovely, enjoy the holiday season!
ReplyDeleteRita, I always smile at the photos you share with special times with your siblings and your children and J. How blessed! The West Virginia hikes look amazing. I know the move was a huge endeavor, but how special that you girls could do this for your sister. I wish her much happiness in her new home.
ReplyDeleteLove the amazing wreaths you all created. Very talented! I love that you are so active with all types of activities. Keep it up, dear friend. Happy Holidays!
Wow, that is quite a move! So glad it is accomplished. We know how that feels, still don't have everything put away, but maybe those things that haven't gotten put away should be given away - haha!
ReplyDeleteYour photo of the Old Grist Mill certainly is heaven and could be on a magazine cover. I love little Jacqueline's face as she watches the show. She is bringing a little theater with her in her costumes - me too!!!
That tree will get up, but for now your wreath - oh gorgeous!
Oh Rita, you have been a busy gal! I'm happy you had some fun times seeing all the blazing fall landscapes with your hike and going to the national park and reserve. I remember a commercial for WV and Almost Heaven. It came back to me when I saw the sign. I loved that! Love the pic of you and Mr. P enjoying your evening out to see the exhibition game. You look adorable sitting on the bed of the red truck with the art you chose. I would have picked that too, it's lovely and how special was all of that! I'm glad little J got to see her play and she's a little doll in her costume for Halloween. Well, you are a lovely sister, one I would want to measure up to. I know the move, getting your sister settled and taking care of everything as you always do was grueling! Then finished and came home to enjoy going out with your daughter. You are the best, mother and sister. Bless you........Hugs and Happy December. Enjoy this joyous season.
ReplyDeleteYou're such an amazing sister, Rita. I feel for people without family. J is so cute and honestly is a "mini me" of you. I see she has your personality too! I hope you can slow down a bit and enjoy the Christmas Season. Happy December!
ReplyDeleteOh Rita, I know you've been a busy gal and sure hope that now that the move is almost behind you that December will be magical. Love the pic of you and your hubby enjoying your evening out, and my favorite picture of you is sitting on the back of the red truck with that stunning photo of the Aurora Borealis. Did you hang the photo in your home? We bought two photos of the Aurora Borealis from our favorite photographer at camp and have yet to hang them. J looks like a ball of fun, and I know you enjoy every minute of being a grandparent. Happy December!
ReplyDeleteYou e been so busy, Rita, with all the packing, purging and organizing for your sister. I’m happy to see that you did have some fun times sprinkled in there with Jacqueline, your daughters, and hubby and your brother. Hopefully you can enjoy December and take time to relax.
ReplyDeleteThe Old Grist Mill is definitely a picturesque location! I love the sign with the state's motto. You have been busy this fall, for sure, and it's good to know that you were able to squeeze in a few fun activities. I know it has been a hard move with your sister!
