Hello, readers, and welcome to Panoply! Happy December!
Today marks the 45th instalment of the Tales of the Traveling Tote, can you believe it? It's all about quarterly tales of ladies connecting friendship and stories of our everyday lives via a MacKenzie-Childs tote we all purchased at one time or another.
To read more about the origin of this series of posts, you can learn how it started here. A link to all my previous tales can be found here.
In mid-September, my sister Marcie & I attended one of a series of "Let's Get Cooking", sponsored by AARP at our Capitol Market. We are lucky to have a James Beard award-winning chef in town who hosts this summer series from April through September, free to the public.
In early October, Marcie went with me for a pumpkin trio workshop in another farmer's market in South Charleston, WV. The local flower farmer hosted it, and it was a brisk morning that day. A coffee vendor supplied us with warm treats for the workshop. Little did she know, but Marcie had broken her hand the day before, and she went to have it x-rayed after the workshop, only to be casted!Mid-October was a good time to do a day trip in WV for some fall leaf peeping. The colors were actually not peak until almost two weeks later, but the day spent with Mr. P., my brother and his companion was a fun time,Jacqueline, my granddaughter, continues to amuse and entertain us. Her latest go to phrase is, "guess what???" She's still all about costumes and makeup (and she's pretty good at it!), and it doesn't even have to be Halloween. This is her first year with Elf on a Shelf, and she named her elf Heart. 💖
I went with Jacqueline, her mommy, and her daddy to a local farm which hosts Fall Fun each year. I did ALL the things with J because mom's arm was in a sling from recent rotator cuff surgery, and dad was chillin'. I had a blast!
This fall was a bit of a roller coaster of emotions. My Panoply sister Jackie passed away in mid-October. Her celebration of life was held in Cincinnati in mid-November. So many of our family traveled from WV to OH for that. It was a very special visitation at the funeral home the night prior to her funeral mass. A volunteer chapter of the Nurses' Honor Guard was held in Jackie's honor, and the place was packed.
The church was also very full for mass the next day, and Jackie's kids held a luncheon for all those who came. It was truly a celebration of who Jackie was and all that she accomplished. Let alone family, Jackie had so many friends and colleagues! It gives me some comfort knowing she is reunited with her husband of 53 years (Jack), who passed away in 2021. Marcie & I will carry on our antiquing as a Panoply duo from this point forward, but we miss her terribly.
Thank you to everyone who called, sent texts, emails, cards, and gave hugs. They were all very much appreciated.
The week of Thanksgiving is the beginning of holiday chaos! There are so many event opportunities, so many come-ons for retailers (including our antique booths running a sale for Black Friday, Small Business Saturday), and so many social gatherings, both family and friends.
We took advantage of our minor league (Charleston Dirty Birds) baseball park's "Light Up the Park" November 24th free admission with 3 on-perishables per person. My oldest daughter and her husband hosted his entire family plus us for a pizza party before. All together, there were 18 of us trying to stay somewhat together in that park you see below!
It was a really fun, chaotic evening, and a great start to the holiday season.
We enjoyed a nice Thanksgiving at my brother's home with a small pocket of eight family members (we were all spread out this year, even the locals). Friday and Saturday were the beginnings of Christmas chaos, with Black Friday and Small Business Saturday. I kept it low-key, shopping with my sister Marcie at small businesses. Meanwhile, my 'kids' and J had a blast at our city center's "Holly Jolly Brawley" opening events. J had the most fun dancing with the Grinch!
NOW, ONTO THE GIVEAWAY!
The Traveling Totes Tribe is offering another giveaway and Jackie is our giveaway sponsor this time at Purple Chocolat Home. One lucky reader who leaves a comment on Jackie's post will have their name thrown into the hat for an opportunity to win these MacKenzie-Childs makeup remover pads and pouch.
Be sure to check out my other traveling sisters' posts to see how they spent their autumn months. It is with a heavy heart that we let everyone know our dear sister Jenna from the Painted Apron passed away in October. Please keep Jenna's family in your prayers, as they celebrate Jenna's creative life mid-December.

Rita C. at Panoply

Good morning Rita, What fall and holiday fun you’ve had. Love seeing cute Jacqueline enjoying the farm and ‘light up’ park’s display looks fantastic.
ReplyDeleteI know you are missing your sister Jackie, and will along with Marcie, going forward in your antique business.
I was so distressed and sad to hear about Jenna. I have really missed having her join our blog hops and visiting her. She was such a creative, vibrant and kind soul.
Look forward to joining you tomorrow. Happy December ♥
What a beautiful but bittersweet time period of traveling -- all for the good and the sad. I love the smiles and know there were plenty of tears. Oh my, Jackie's photo as a nurse looks so much alike. You are CLEARLY all sisters in every way, including appearance! Big hugs on that. And for Jenna. I learned of that this weekend and have been so deeply saddened by it ever since. I learned so very much from her and (like you) she was one of the bloggers I wish I had the chance to me. We still have time. But it's a reminder that we never know how much time that is. Big hugs. (And your card arrived Saturday -- thank you!)
ReplyDeleteRita, you and Miss Luna have been busy girls! It's fun to see all the activity attending fun events with family and friends. Jacqueline is really growing and such an adorable child. I know it is a blessing for all of you. What a lucky child to have you in her life.
ReplyDeleteMy heart hurts for you missing Jackie. I think of you often, knowing the loss you endured. Thinking of our dear Jenna as well and her precious family. Jenna was a light for each of us. She brought laughter and creativity like no other. I will miss her dearly, and think of her family who have lost their mother and grandmother.
Keep traveling, my friend, life is short, and we all need to live in the moment. Thank you for sharing such joy in your posts. You are a dear friend! I so appreciate you, Rita! Merry, Merry as we scurry into the Christmas holidays. I know you and Miss Luna will be busy!
You've had a very busy Fall filled with exciting adventures and family fun. Losing a long time friend, Jackie, and a colleague, Jenna is so difficult. You will carry them in your heart and honor them always.
ReplyDeleteIt was such a lovely thing to see you spend such a special day with your granddaughter. The joy you felt comes through in every picture you posted.
Wishing you and your family a very Merry Christmas and many more adventures together.
Lynne, Thrifting Wonderland
Miss Luna has been busy accompanying you on fun adventures. Thanks for sharing the recipes from the cooking demonstration with Chef Paul. You definitely looked chilly at the pumpkin workshop with Marcie, and I hope her hand is healing. It's not easy using just one hand while the other is in a cast. Your leaf peeping photos are gorgeous! It's fun seeing your activity with family and friends, and I hope it brings you joy as you continue to grieve your beautiful sister Jackie. It's nice to hear that you and Marcie will carry on with your antiquing. I just went to an antique action that lasted 10 days (they had TONS of antiques from being in the antique business 35 years), and I thought of you. I love a good auctioneer :-) I bid on a bubble glass vase that was marked $225 and got it for $25. Wishing you and your family a Merry Christmas, and I know your granddaughter Jacqueline will continue to make you smile. Deb
ReplyDeleteMerry, Merry Monday! Rita you had a very busy autumn season but all the events look like great fun. I can’t believe how fast J is growing. You are the perfect grandmother enjoying all of her fun activities. She is adorable and her personality shines through the photos! Among all the joy comes the sadness of the passing of your lovely sister and business partner. The missing of loved ones is heightened during the holidays season. Jenna was a bright spot in my blogging experience. I have missed her talent and creativity!
ReplyDeleteI look forward to the blog hop tomorrow!
What a busy and exciting fall for you - J is adorable and growing up so quickly (the little ones make holiday events so exciting, I love seeing this thru their eyes!). The loss of your sister and Jenna certainly makes us appreciate every day a little bit more. Enjoy the holiday month!
ReplyDeleteRita, such fun times for you and Miss Luna at the flower farm and Let’s get cooking event.
ReplyDeleteI would love both of those events. I am so sorry you lost your dear sister, Jackie. May her sweet memories bring you comfort. Jacqueline is such a bubbly and sweet little girl. I am so glad you live close enough to spend time with her. Beautiful memories in the making with your sweet granddaughter. I love seeing your family photos. A lovely tribute to our dear Jenna. We shall miss her sweet personality, recipes, rhymes and more. Happy Holidays Rita.
Rita, you've had a whirlwind of a season! I'm so sorry for the loss of your sister, truly a heart wrenching time. May you find peace with that. I'm always amazed at how Jacqueline changes as she grows. A darling little girl. We will all miss Jenna and her enlightening blog posts. She was a special and gifted artist. Happy December Rita, may you and Will be filled with the season of Christmas......
ReplyDeleteYou have had a lot going on and all great things to do. I love the pic of J dancing with the Grinch. How fun to be able to take Miss Luna to the cooking event. Sounds like a fun time. I know this Christmas will be hard with missing your sister. I love that the nurses honor guard came to her wake. How sad we lost a sweet blogger friend in Jenna. Prayers for her family. Here we go with the down hill slide not Christmas. Enjoy it all. Love Kris
ReplyDeleteHappy December, I enjoyed catching up with you.
ReplyDeleteI love the nurses honor guard. It makes my heart swell to see them honor your sister.
I enjoyed all the photos of your sweet little one.
Hugs and Prayers,
Carla
I am so sorry to hear about Jackie. What beautiful pictures you shared of her. I adore the one with the nurse's hat, and what an honor to her with all of the nurses. That is so touching. That along with Jenna is pretty emotional. So glad they can be reunited with their sweet loves.
ReplyDeleteI love the Christmas chaos you shared! It is so fun to see the kids' faces light up. The Grinch was extra special.
Your cooking event looked so fun too. I always love a cooking class. Looking forward to my own Christmas chaos! haha
Merry December. You have had a busy fall. I was so happy to catch up with you. Your pictures of Jackie are so beautiful. I want to send you hugs this Christmas season without her. How wonderful that the Nurses Honor Guard came to her memorial.
ReplyDeleteThen, another loss: our dear friend Jenna. She will be greatly missed. What a talented blogger she was!
I thank God for another day. Sending more hugs your way.
So very saddened to hear that Jenna passed away. Her beautiful art will be missed.
ReplyDeleteYou have been very busy, My Friend! What a lovely tribute to Jackie. Thanks for sharing the photos of the Nurse's Honor Guard. How special! Of course I always love seeing Princess J. She reminds me of our Shanley who always went to preschool and Kindergarten in costume; and the weather did not hinder her....she would put jeans or leggings underneath the costumes!
ReplyDeleteThe light up the park event is one that would be right down my alley. Your photos are spectacular!
You had a busy and fun Fall, and yet filled with grief over the loss of your beloved sister, Jackie, and then Jenna. It sure makes us appreciate our blessings each and everyday. I know your little Miss Jacqueline brings joy and happiness to fill your heart, Rita.
ReplyDeleteRita, You have had many fun activities this fall. They all sound terrific! I know Jackie's passing has been challenging. I know you will miss Jenna as well. It seems we've all lost special loved ones in 2025. This holiday season will have so many of us sharing memories of those who touched our lives. I know you have many good memories of your sweet sister. It's wonderful that little J gets to visit regularly and brighten your day! She's a little doll! You can tell she's just so happy! She'll make you smile! Your picture of the three of you is great! Y'all are definitely sisters! May God give you the comfort you need during this time. Clara ❤️
ReplyDeleteRita, It’s always great to hear from you and to see what has been happening. I was shocked to hear that Jenna had passed. Her work was lovely! It was very touching to hear and see photos of your sister’s celebration of life. She will live in your heart forever. And little J is sure growing!
ReplyDeleteHave a blessed Christmas 🎄
