Miscellaneous Musings No. 19

Hello, readers, and welcome to my Rolodex brain dump of miscellaneous musings. These tend to be random thoughts that strike a chord with me at one time or another, usually in a funny way (except for that last one on Life in Limbo. To see my priors, they're listed here.

I went to an estate sale last week which was held on a farm. The parking attendant even found a treasure, or his twin, I'm not really sure which.

We took the Covid shots back in January / February, and have been enjoying free donuts from Krispy Kreme multiple times since. We just drive through, and when we get to the window, I just flash the picture of our saved cards stored in my phone.

We don't do this now that we can dine in most places, but there were many times when we would grab a fast food lunch and sit in our car on the parking lot of a local strip mall where, besides the stores and restaurants, our DMV administers the driving skills test for drivers with learners licenses. Drivers have to master parallel parking between the barrels pictured below. When not actually testing, many learners would come here just to practice parallel parking. We had more than a few laughs watching hopeless cases.
You think common core math is hard? How about Kroger math? Here were a couple examples we ran into while shopping lately. You figure them out!

Two 1/2 doz for $5 or 1 doz for $3.99
Here's something that caught my eye at the grocery. Too bad I don't like te-kill-ya.
I have an antique dealer friend who has a chicken coop. She named three of her hens after me and my Panoply sisters for our personalities. I think she told me she named this one after me because she was bossy. Either that or skinny. Here's a picture of Rita. 😂
I do eat! Just ask Mr. P. I eat more than he does, except for sweets (he has me beat, but I do well for myself). Ever since Cindy styled an alfresco table using these individual pies, they have become regular pickups for me at the grocery. These little bad boys come in key lime, coconut (both of which I like), banana (haven't tried) and the ever elusive, french silk. Best recent caloric value!
It's peach season, and I bet I've consumed at least ten pounds of those gems in the past month. Aldi sells a great little beverage that I've really enjoyed this year. too. It's a hard wine seltzer, very light in alcoholic content, perfect for a hot, summer day, especially with peaches.
We have a local guy who started his own microgreens business with his stimulus checks, and is doing amazingly well. I shop our local Farmers' Market and buy them for weekly salads. Sunflower, Rambo Radish, Broccoli, Spicy Salad Mix....they are yum.me. Here's a link to his story:  Oh My Greens.
I live along the river that flows through my home town. When I was placing an order by phone last spring (not typical for me, but I couldn't get the website to give me a promo code credit). Knowing my address is not easy to spell, let alone understand (especially in my Appalachian twang: ka.naw - two syllables), I spelled it for the clerk (btw, there was no language barrier between us): K-A-N-A-W-H-A. If you look up the phonetic pronunciation on Google, you'll get the Google, three syllable, first syllable emphasis version:  kaa.nuh.waa - that's just wrong. Anyway, here's how my package came, and I am surprised it even got here.
From the Facebook files: Just about every blogger I know (including myself) has made a charcuterie board / tray of some sort, but this one seems aimed particularly at the younger bloggers.
All this talk of food leads one to think of exercising. Mr. P's oldest sister passed away back in April, which was very sad for all of us. She had overcome some major health issues throughout 2020 (not Covid). She had been going to our local gym regularly with Mr. P. until late in 2019. Even after overcoming her obstacles and getting Covid shots, she resumed going to the gym earlier this year, only to eventually succumb to a blood disorder. While cleaning out her condo, another of Mr. P's sisters found this post-it note:
😂😂😂 I guess she told us!

This was also seen on Facebook a while back, and worth sharing:
I'll leave with you that last one, on a positive note. I hope you find something amusing, humorous or thought-provoking in your day-to-day activities. Take care, and take care not to take yourself too seriously.

  1. And here I thought I missed going to Krogers cuz we don't have one by me. LOL Any kind of Math right now for me though. Too early, but even I had trouble with how they came up with those...geez.

The DMV test story made me laugh when I saw her face. Quirk story, I came across a guy one Sunday morning using the parking lot across from our house to teach his teenage daughter how to drive. I was gardening in the front as usual and they drove by and he stopped to explain what they were doing because all she was doing was circling...I told him if he thought she'd get a better lesson then take her to the Cemetery a few miles away. (Cause I could her him yelling at her - slow down, use your signl, etc) You should have seen her face! LOL I yelled at her "no, no, no... it has curvy streets and one way roads. Plus no one there minds if you hit them, their already dead." The Dad was almost guffawing, the kid was not amused. LOL

  2. What an amazing poem! I also love Marie Callendar's French Silk pies, I get them only on holidays or I would be too big to fit through a door. We've been playing pickleball to get some exercise, I hate just doing exercise at a gym.

  4. Wow -- that poem is very cool. Thanks for sharing that one. I might just have to do the same. I love your musings and there is such fun here. I do think that fellow in the parking lot found his twin! The Kroger math cracks me up -- I've noticed that here. (Yesterday they started pushing mask wearing again and while I'm usually a part-time customer, going to my nearby independent, they got a new regular with me.) Love the charcuterie board sign and you have given me a couple of new things to look for at the store -- those popsicles and the pies! Isn't it kind of nice to know that even if your address is butchered they can find you?

  5. Rita, I love the musings! The kids here look at us like we are some kind of wizard since we can do math in our head! The parking lot attendant found the perfect twin. Bet he makes a great Santa during the holidays. I hate the gym too but I do like walking. When at the gym, I always think I should be doing some type of housework instead like dusting (I hate to dust!). Love the poem! Wow! Your post office is good! We don't get our mail even with the correct spelling here. That's how we meet the neighbors by exchanging mail with the neighbors from the other side of the neighborhood who got our mail. Keep the musings coming. Love your new picture! Have a great weekend! Clara❤️

  9. Rita, how often does someone name a hen after you?!! I must check on the Marie Callender pies, like Mr. P I love sweets. We don’t have a Kroger’s, but I have often seen those little signs that make me scratch my head. I saw the charcuterie board definition on FB and thought it was hilarious and true. Love your musings and Happy Weekend!

  10. The poem is pretty awesome. Free donuts, who knew? We don't have a Krogers here but we have similar sign. As for the Rita freezes, my friend loves them. I do prefer Gin. Wonderful post to start the weekend.

  14. I guess this mathematically challenged girl isn't doing too badly after all. Rita, the chook.....this makes me smile. Love the sense of humour of your late sister-in-law. How sad she went through so much difficulty in her last years. Love the last poem. It says it all really ...how we look at life...our attitudes. Thank you for making me chuckle. Your post, Rita, has made my day.

  16. Funny post Rita. I’m sorry to hear about your sister in law. Micro greens story is inspiring. I think I would be too nervous for the student driver to watch. Would never want them to see me. Thanks for the musings!

    1. Susan, thank you for your sentiment on my sil. And isn't it nice to see someone taking that stimulus and making good of it? He even employs his parents now. I love it.

  17. Isn’t that poem amazing to read it from the bottom up??!! Santa and his real life twin made me smile! I saw that charcuterie sign on FB! I’ll have to look into the hard seltzer drinks from Aldi, as I haven’t been there in awhile. Yes, Kroger’s math is head scratching for sure. I’m so sorry about Mr. P’s sister. Have a lovely weekend.

  20. Good morning, Rita. I love this post and it is a fine example of why I think you should write books. I do love your humor and I know it would come through in a book. You are a talent, my friend. Love hearing about the hens and seeing the one named Rita.

  21. Love your musings Rita and you found Santa! Kroger math reminds me of toilet paper math at the grocery store, way too complicated. :) So sorry about your SIL, I love her gym philosophy though.

  23. What delightful things you have discovered! I wonder how much Kroger would charge for those things when they went to ring them up! Oh, how true that is about the charcuterie boards! What fun!
