New Season, New Home

Hello, my friends! It's a new day, a new season, and I have some news. We're moving!

Yes, after two and a half years of urban living and beautiful views like the one above, we lucked into an opportunity to move back to our old neighborhood. It's a 1938 build that was renovated in 2015 for first floor living. Believe it or not, it was upon picking up an estate sale purchase that triggered this. Guess what I bought? Dishes!

I will have a small enough yard to be able to maintain as well as piddle in again (after some serious editing). All the neighbors have already welcomed us, and we're excited to close next week and begin the transition.

I've already started packing my dishes that are in the condo. I should've left my estate sale purchase there!
There is a bonus room over the double car garage, and I will have four cubbies like the two you see on the left in the realtor's photo below. I will be able to store all my dishes [we'll see, there are still a lot more in storage] at the house.
This house is about seven blocks west of where our former home was. We still walk this path frequently, especially during COVID last year, as it has very low traffic, and you can even walk in the streets, safely distancing.

Little did I know when I photographed the pretty peonies last spring, or even bought the dishes in August, that we would be buying this house!

We negotiated several yard items in the contract because we got rid of ALL that stuff when we moved to the condo. Never say never...

Who knows where my Thanksgiving table will be set, but I hope it's in the new house. If I don't comment on your blog posts in the coming weeks, it's not that I'm ignoring you, I'm just super busy. If not packing, then I'm trying to spend time with my little Birdie, Jacqueline. She'll be six weeks old tomorrow, and she and her mama like walking/jogging in our new neighborhood too!
Prayers for a swift sale of our condo will be greatly appreciated. Stay tuned for more...

  1. Oh Rita, I'm so happy and excited for you, its a lovely home!!! You'll be able to spread out a bit and have fun back in the garden. I imagine your green thumb has been a bit itchy. After this last few years I know the importance of not having to run up and down stairs 5 times a day. So much easier. Keep us updated if possible while you work. xo

  8. Congratulations Rita! We know you are excited! As beautiful as your condo is, it should sell quickly. Your new house is beautiful too and I'm excited for you! 9. Rita, first, congratulations on your sweet little granddaughter!!! What joy she is going to add to your lives. Thrilled for you. And, what a lucky girl she is to have you as a grandmother. 10. I was sitting down this A.M. to reply back to your comment/email and got this post in my inbox. I am so happy for you! I know things have been different for you both the past two years and you've enjoyed certain aspects of condo living. I wish it was easier to just move, I don't envy you the next couple of weeks.

Although I always did enjoy the putting away in a new home stuff. Usually....LOL, unless I made a mistake where I put it the first time and had to move it twice. I look forward to lots of before pictures of inside and out. I know you guys are going to be so happy there!

  14. What a fabulous house, Rita! I love the style of it, the windows, the small yard, just the feel of it. And the bonus room is indeed a bonus, especially if it has good storage! Ha! I can relate to the dishes. When I anticipate downsizing I can't bear to think of not moving the dishes -- even the ones I don't use much!

And little Jacqueline is adorable! I love the happy smiles in these pictures. I'm so glad you live close enough to do those walks. Happy packing and good thoughts on the sale of your condo!

  15. Rita, This is wonderful news. The modern apartment is stunning, but it seems like you are more of a house person. A yard is a fabulous place to keep fit and outside. I bet the gears are spinning with creativity. I'm happy for you.

  17. I am so excited for you Rita, I know you tried to love condo living but your heart was never quite there. How wonderful to find a great house in your old neighborhood, with friendly neighbors and a lovely garden! And the fact that your new granddaughter is close by is so great, you will be able to watch her grow and will have such a bond with her! Prayers and don't work too hard!

  18. I am thrilled for you. A lovely house with lots of storage and a beautiful yard. Your grandmother can play and romp and you can take your lovely walks. How special to be able to do this. Your neighbors are probably so happy to have you back. I know you are busy, so take care of yourselves while moving and organizing.

  19. Oh, Rita, I am so excited for you. 1938 is a very good year. That is when our sweet home was built. Beware of small yards. I never thought this small yard would become one of such beauty and work. It is amazing what you can do with a small yard. To me, the peonies are such a good sign. Love resided in your home for sure. Enjoy all the moments, with Jacqueline and your new adventure. I am certain your condo will sell quickly and you will make wonderful memories in your new home.

  21. How heavenly to be able to buy a home in your old neighborhood. What a beautiful home it is, too. I am so happy for you. As I am much older than you, I often think about the neighborhood where I grew up and how horribly it has changed. I'm glad your old neighborhood is still so beautiful. Enjoy every minute - it goes by way too fast.

    1. Thank you, Lisa. The neighborhood where I grew up is a very scary one now, but this old neighborhood we're going to still has great charm. We're really looking forward to it.

  22. Rita, how exciting! Your new home looks lovely, and those peonies--wow!!! How wonderful to be in such close proximity to your sweet grandbaby! Happy for you, friend, and I look forward to following along in your new journey.

  23. Congratulations!!! I absolutely love the style of your new home....the windows...so homey and inviting. Someday I'm looking forward to your blog of condo living vs. house living....and your thoughts. So happy for you that this all 'fell' into place. Once in a while my daughter and I used to drive thru this condo complex and admire the beautiful landscaping and ponds etc and now she lives there!!! Plus your bonus is your precious granddaughter so close by....that is the biggest blessing of all. You'll be settled in no time and that Thanksgiving table will be gorgeous! Take care.

  24. Rita, Congratulations on your new home. Such an exciting time. I hope your move will be stress free and easy going. It is so wonderful to hear that you get to spend time with your sweet granddaughter. I am sure she provides everyone with plenty of happiness and sunshine. Good luck on your move.

  25. Oh, to have flowers growing in the garden again! Gorgeous peonies, gorgeous home! All the best with the move and for selling your condo, too, Rita. And....look at your Jaqueline; she is so very sweet.

  26. I'm so glad you found a house and garden to be back in your neighborhood. The home is very pretty! I don't think I could live in a condo. I love gardening and space. We downsized 9yrs ago into inherited mother-in-law house. I have had to do alot of adjusting in smaller home. Hubby didn't like the upkeep of larger house and yard we had when retired. Jacqueline is cute.

    1. Nancy, thank you. The one very good thing about downsizing to the condo is how we purged so much unnecessary stuff. It makes the thought of this move seem quite manageable, even though we'll need to replace a few things.

  27. Rita, it's all falling into place. I'm truly excited for you and Will. I'm eager to see how you put your touch on the garden. Needless to say, I envy all the wonderful storage space in this new home. Ours too was built in the 30s, but it doesn't have much storage space. I've had to get creative.

  28. Congratulations and yes, prayers for a quick sale of the condo/loft. It's fun to see you with a baby in tow. How exciting to have this little Birdie in your life.

  29. This is such exciting news Rita, I couldn't be happier for you! Yes, never say never, this house was just waiting for you. I think it's gorgeous and sounds like the perfect fit for you and hubs too. Love it is the same neighborhood so you are familiar and also know everyone. A great place for you to stroll the beautiful baby. Can't wait for more pics and to see your decorating. Hope the condo moves quickly, a good market to sell. Congratulations........

  30. Congratulations Rita!! I sensed that you missed the space and yard of your home, and now you will have the best of both worlds -- more manageable than the other house, and the big purge already accomplished!! The house and those PEONIES!!! Wonderful! Looking forward to hearing more about making the new house into a home!
