Valentine's Day: Birds of a Feather

Hello, welcome to my blog, Panoply! Today I want to share a tablescape idea for Valentine's Day: Birds of a Feather. It doesn't have to pertain to just couples; in fact, it can be a great Galentine's Day celebration.
I'm also hosting a group of other blogging table enthusiasts who are sharing their ideas for a Valentine's Day table. After all, as the adage goes, "birds of a feather flock together"! Their links are further in this post, so be sure to see them all.
In wintertime, cardinals gather in loose flocks to feed together. The Northern Cardinal (cardinalis cardinalis) male sports that bright red plumage, while the female cardinal is more brown with warm red accents. My table decor dons the beautiful red of the male cardinal most universally recognized, but my interpretation leans toward that loose flock idea of friends sharing a meal.
Folks, we have been buried under snow and ice since January 6th, and that fact was not lost on me as I was visualizing and creating this tablescape. From the icy appearance of the chargers used, to the snowy texture of the runner down the table's center, it was analogous to the reality of what we are experiencing outdoors.
At nighttime, the outdoors takes on a glow as snow reflects from the roads and landscape beneath the streetlights. In the dining room, I mimicked that outdoor glow with the candlelight on the table and the fireplace nearby.
The song of the cardinal is known as one of "cheer, cheer, cheer". I wanted that feeling in the midst of the wintry scene, and so I added two arrangements of flowers on the table. There is no better time to add flowers in your home than in the dead of winter, in my opinion.
When I first pulled all my elements for the table, it was primarily a white tabletop. Not only did my first photos appear whitewashed, the entire room felt a little cold, too much a reminder of the outdoors. I added the red cashmere throw on the table for added warmth and color saturation.
A cardinal sighting which captures your attention, according to Native American interpretation, symbolizes harmonious, monogamous relationships, or the potential for one in the near future if single.

In Christianity, the cardinal represents the fire and vitality of the living spirit, the blood of Christ and the hope of resurrection for humanity through His death.

Cardinal symbolism suggests its sighting signifies a visit from a loved one who has already passed, a sort of messenger left for personal interpretation or meaning.
Setting a pretty table speaks volumes. Don't wait to use all your pretty things. You never know how short your time or the time of others will be. Pull out all the stops - the china, the crystal, the flowers. Make someone feel special, whether it's one or more. What you do for others will be remembered. As for me, I'll be celebrating my valentine on the day this post is published (January 28th). Today's his birthday. ❤️

  1. You had me at Cardinals Rita! I love the bird’s eye view of your table and theme of ‘birds of a feather’! Your red throw is so cozy and cheery as a table topper with your snowy white runner with the soft glow of the lights underneath and your fireplace in the background. Your LCF snow globe is the perfect centerpiece with your winter weather and landscape. We haven’t had snow but I’ve been busy keeping the feeders full with our Arctic temps. Cardinals are such a cheery sight with their red plumage in the dead of winter and we have lots of Cardinals visitors to our feeders and yard. I love your MKC plates! They were tempting, but I restrained myself (barely :) but did treat myself to your napkin rings after Christmas. I wholeheartedly agree with about flowers in winter and pulling out all the stops and not waiting to use your pretty tableware. Thank you so much for your organizing efforts for these hops and Happy Birthday to Mr. P, my hubby’s birthday is the 31st. 🐦❤️

  2. First of all, Happy Birthday to your guy! What a great table to celebrate his special day! Your flowers are so special and I am lovin' the dishes! Great shot of the cardinal (we haven't seen one in a while here). Hoping your snow melts away quickly - we are getting more today!

  4. What a great theme for a Valentine table, between the birds of a feather flocking together and the symbol of a cardinal being a lost loved one, it makes it so appropriate for a celebration of love! Your plates and napkins rings are fabulous and you have appointed them well. I, too, have been buried in snow, so I see the perfect scene you set with the white snow in front of the fireplace! Thank you for gathering us birds together once again!! I hope you have a warm and lovely Valentine’s Day❤️

  5. Mary your cardinal table has my heart as the cardinals have always been one of my favorite birds. I had a pair until Hurricane Ian and I am not sure what happened to them but I look for them almost every day...perhaps they will return. Your fire is so cozy and what a wonderful birthday for your honey as well as Valentine's Day celebration. I love the cardinal napkin rings and even though I have professed to end all future purchases (due to my excess of dinnerware pieces), I would love to find more cardinal things. Your photos of these magnificent birds are beautiful in the snow as it showcases their brilliant red colors. Thank you for all your organizational abilities which always brings about a successful blog hop. Hugs dear friend....lets hope the Mountaineers and Jayhawks begin some consistent playing!

  6. Good morning, Rita! I am a big fan of cardinals, I watch their comings and goings from my kitchen window every day. Their bright red plumage is a beautiful sight during the gray of winter! I love the LCF cardinal snow globe, it is perfect for your theme. The red cashmere throw gives your lovely table a feeling of warmth and comfort. The MKC plates are gorgeous, how I would like to add those to my collection, but I am seriously running out of storage! Happy birthday to your hubby and enjoy celebrating him on this day!

As always, thank you for all of your work putting together the hops, you are amazing!

Rita, firstly, thank you for hosting us for these fun holiday tablescape hops. You are the best!!! I flew right in to this beautiful table. Cardinals are gathered about my new feeder, so it's as if I set a beautiful table for them. Ha! Ha! Actually I need to go refill the table!
I will tell my cardinals about your gorgeous table, and they will be excited.
Love the MKC plates! How fun to add those. They will be fun for any occasion. Your bird's eye view always impresses, Rita. I've not mastered that art.
The cardinal snow globe is a beauty, and the glow of the candles really sets a romantic feel among the red toile. The warmth and cozy touch of dining by a lit fireplace is the ultimate touch. I often set a small table in our living room in front of a cozy fire. It's just the best!
Again, thank you, thank you for your leadership!

  15. I really enjoyed learning more about the habits of cardinals, Rita. We have masses of them at our feeders during the winter all lining up on the surrounding trees to take their turns at the feeders. The symbolism is quite significant and I love how you worked these wonderful birds into your theme. Using the shawl to warm up the table was such a good idea. It looks cozy and warm and just right for Valentine's Day. Love the china choices and the creative centerpiece. Happy Valentine's Day!

  16. Oh, Rita! I love your gorgeous MacKenzie-Childs cardinal-themed table. The cardinal is my favorite bird. In bird lore they are considered messengers from heaven. Trip keeps a special cardinal feeder stocked with a cardinal seed mix so we can attract them. We usually have two to three cardinal couples living on our property. I also like the snowy and wintry aspects of your tablescape. Cardinals are wonderful symbols for Valentine's Day.
Thanks for hosting these super-fun blog hop parties for us. :D

  17. What a beautiful cardinal themed table you’ve set, Rita. I agree that flowers really perk up the spirits in winter and I bought myself a grocery store bunch the other day. I do get lots of cardinals to my feeders and they’re always a welcome sight. Happy Birthday to Mr. P! I’m sure he’ll love his cozy meal by your fireside and at your pretty table. ♥️

  18. Rita, you couldn't have shared this beautiful colorful table with beautiful cardinals at a better time than this cold winter we are having. Nothing makes me happier than looking out the window and seeing the pop of red in the yard or trees. Of course, the first thing to do is "make a wish" which of course is being hopeful the cold will soon be out of here!. I love your table and how you copy nature, love the icy chargers, flowers and of course the cardinals. The dining room is so cozy with the fireplace. Happy Valentine's Day and a Happy Birthday wish to Mr P.

  19. Rita, I adore birds and your cardinal inspired table makes me so happy! I enjoyed reading all of the interesting facts that you shared. Your rich red throw makes the perfect festive underpinning for your table, and the white fabric bunched down the center mimics the snow perfectly. Your floral arrangements are gorgeous, and I agree that flowers brighten things up on these dreary winter days. Your plate stack is beautiful, and I am swooning over the MacKenzie Child’s plates. Thanks so much for hosting this fun hop. I hope you have a happy Valentine’s Day! Shannon@Belle Bleu Interiors

  20. Rita, how nice to receive a blog post to you on this wintery day. The table is inspiring. From you, I have learned that table setting is an art and like all art, you can express your true feelings and self. I have been feeding the cardinals, the little brown wrens and the red=breasted finch all winter and I have a huge crowd waiting for me to get up and get out there every morning. It never fails to cross my mind that I wish the souls of all my departed family were residing within the hearts of the many cardinals I see each day. My Mom died on November 30th of 2024 at the age of 95. Her birthday is tomorrow, January 29th. I know she liked the lore of the cardinals also and she once told me that when she went to our summer home in the northwoods of Wisconsin the spring after he died, she, missed him terribly, walked to the window and saw a cardinal in the bush near where she was standing. I hope so. Who says God couldn't send someone on a little trip to visit someone who is missing them? Love, Ginene

  22. The black-white-red combo is so wonderful together -- modern but classic. I love that little snowglobe. And you are spot on about using your good things now. We never know about our remaining time and what a shame to not be ABLE to use them. It's an important rule to live by.

  23. Happy Birthday and Happy Valentine's Day. What a warm and inviting table. I am sorry to hear about all of your snow, but your table is so cozy and very welcoming. I am thrilled to see you incorporated the red cardinals. I have heard of their meaning which you described too. Every time I see a cardinal or several outside my bedroom window, I immediately think of a visiting family member who had passed. Your table makes such a big impact with both the cardinal and its vibrant colors and mix of patterns. I love the cardinal lit centerpiece too. I hope you stay warm and you have a wonderful time celebrating your hubbie's birthday and Valentine's Day.
