Tales of the Traveling Tote #40 and Giveaway

Hello, readers, and welcome to Panoply! Today marks the 40th instalment of the Tales of the Traveling Tote, can you believe it? That's ten years of quarterly tales of ladies connecting friendship and stories of our everyday lives via a MacKenzie-Childs tote we all purchased at one time or another. If you're not familiar with the concept behind this series of posts, you can read how it started here. A link to all my previous tales can be found here

It's been a summer like no other here in my West Virginia zone 7a region. Our normal rainfall for Jun-Aug is approximately 14 inches, and we've received only 7 inches in these past three months, total. In July 2023, we received 10 inches in that one month alone. In spite of it all, my volunteer crepe myrtle is loving the conditions and is a star in its third year in my landscape garden.
I've been a servant to my landscape garden, watering almost every single day. While we had a slight break in temps in mid-August like much of the nation (still no rain for us), we were back to high temps and severe drought conditions last week (that weather station reading on the left is outdoor, the right is indoor). While my plants are surviving, my grass is dead dormant. Will it come back come in September?? 🀷🏻‍♀️We shall see. Stay tuned.

Needless to say, there's been only a little travel away from home for me this summer. But I love gardening, and I love being home, too.

I've been walking my neighborhood almost daily for the past 25 years, and recently came upon a pawpaw tree for the first time in the wild, even though they're native to WV. Have you ever tried one? You know the fruit is ripe when you detect a tropical-like smell. The texture is a bit like a banana, but seeds must be removed first. We have an independent ice cream shop that has offered pawpaw ice cream when in season, which is typically the end of August.
Another thing on my walks that's new is an outdoor gym called The Fitness Court, thanks to a donor at the campus near where we live. It was just opened in June. I've been working on my suspended plank, and I'm up to 75 seconds. I'm trying to reach the 'savage' title of 3 minutes like the soccer player who demonstrated it at the ribbon-cutting. Ha!
My local Panoply sister and I traveled to our third Panoply sister's home in Cincinnati in June. We are in our 17th year of operating booth spaces at the South Charleston Antique Mall (WV, not SC). Each time we get together, we do a variety of tasks: shop, haul, divide, price, etc. With the June trip, we hauled back the two pieces of furniture shown below, and styled them in our booth.
We Panoply sisters still love the hunt most of all, and early August had us going to a much anticipated estate sale. Even though we left early to try being the first to enter, there were already 34 people in line when we got there.πŸ™„ Maybe I shouldn't have taken the side trip beforehand for my curbside treasures below! I had a neighbor who was moving into assisted care who took all he and his wife wanted, leaving the rest to a turnkey operation who'd be flipping the house. These items were on the side of the alley adjacent to their home. Once there were two St Francis statutes, but the sanitation truck decimated one last year. I rescued the one with only a broken bowl (with hands attached). I E6000 glued him back together, and he now resides in my landscape.
In mid-July Mr. P. and I took an overnight trip with one of my brothers and his companion for a few stops in eastern WV: Blackwater Falls State Park (the water flow was low); Canaan Valley Ski Resort area, and Elkins for a dinner / music entertainment show. It was a little cooler there vs home.
In mid-August, we celebrated Jacqueline's 3rd birthday at a place called All About Fun. It's a venue that has all sorts of blow up play stations, and private rooms to celebrate the special one. J is into wearing costumes right now, and her princess costuming with crowns, high heels and jewelry were a real hit. On her actual day, she got to wear the sombrero at a local Mexican restaurant.
Mimi was at the party to help set up, but also to join in the fun with the kiddos!
The third week of August was another trip to Cincinnati to work on more inventory for our booths. We took a break one day for lunch on the Ohio River at a fun place called Cabana on the River.
Our haul we worked on this time was a plethora of Halloween. As retailers, it's definitely time to have these in our booths! We are also working on Thanksgiving and Christmas items as well.

  1. Look at you go planking Rita, I’m so impressed! Kudos to rescuing St. Francis and reassembling him. The views on your road trip/ski resort area look beautiful and cool. Adorable photos of Jacqueline! Love that pose with her jewelry in her monarch butterfly(?) dress and I got a kick out of you going down the slide. 😊 I think shopping for your seasonal items and displaying them in your booth would be loads of fun (work too as I know from my former retail career.) Happy September, bring on the cooler temps and some rain!

  2. For "not going much of anywhere" you certainly have been on the road -- and it looks wonderful. Good times with your sisters, antiquing and hunting, and being with Will and your brother all sound wonderful. I would hate your water bill this summer but the garden looks good despite the drought! Can Jacqueline be that grown up already? It feels like she was just born yesterday and you had photos of you holding an infant! She is so darling!

  3. P.S. Forgot to say I’ve never seen a PawPaw tree even though it shows we’re one of the 20 states it grows in. I just read they’re the host plant for Zebra Swallowtail Butterfly which we don’t see either.

  5. Hi Rita. Little J is too cute. I am glad you had some fun trips to fix up your booth. Love all the Halloween. I have never heard of Pawpaw how interesting. That outdoor gym is pretty amazing. Happy Labor Day. Hugs Kris

  6. We have pawpaw trees in New York, and our friends give us fruit from their trees each year. I made a pie, and it was really good. I'll send you the link. I'm glad you had a great summer and found new items for your booth. Little J is a year younger than our Claire who turned 4 this week and her party was yesterday. You will notice how J's parties change over the new few years :-) And look at you planking Rita! I go to the gym Monday through Friday, and still don't think I could do as good as you on the plank. I hope September will bring you some much needed rain and cooler temperatures. I enjoyed reading about your summer!

  7. Rita, I've added your link back in to my post. Not sure how it got deleted, so sorry for the error. Love seeing your summer adventures. I now how difficult without the natural rainfall for your garden. I worry that the water situation will only get worse. Not good for our gardens! Glad you successfully repaired your St. Francis. Impressive! Love the cute photos of Miss J. She is adorable!!! And you on the plank. Wow! Now that is impressive! Have a fabulous month ahead!

  8. Rita, your summer tied to your plants sounds familiar, we've had to do watering daily for plant survival! I do think your lawn will come back after rain and cooler temps. I am not familiar with a PawPaw tree so I found this so interesting. I love you rescued the St Francis statue and it's perfect for your garden. Glad you and Mr. P had a little getaway, press scenery in WV. It's hard to get use to calling baby J Jacqueline! Hard to believe she's already three. Happy Birthday darling Jacqueline......and Happy September Rita.
PS, I am so impressed with your suspended plank, wow!

  9. It's been very hot and dry this summer in Alabama too Rita, definitely challenging conditions for the garden! Your crepe myrtle looks beautiful. The state park you visited has beautiful views! I know you love those shopping trips with your sisters, how much fun to do the booth with them, it looks like you found some great things for fall. Jacqueline is so adorable, they do grow up so fast! I am very impressed with your planking, wow! Happy September and hopefully cooler temps and rain is on the way~

  10. I had to show my husband your incredible plank! It's those ballerina muscles and strength. Your antique haul is amazing. I loved doing that so much. The thrill of the hunt and fun of creating seasonal spaces. It's wonderful that you can have that common interest with your sisters. J's birthday party is so adorable; she's growing up fast. Adorable monarch costume. We had a really wet first half of the summer, then the moisture shut off and we haven't had our grass mowed in weeks. It looks like a desert outside even though we water several times a week. I keep water out for the wildlife out back and it constantly needs to be filled. Watering the landscape shrubs and bushes is getting old... Here's to cooler weather and some rain!

  11. We're spending as much time as we can inside to stay cool and out of the heat! Fonda

  12. Rita, I can't believe that Baby J is three! We can know longer call her baby! Wow, she is such a little cutie. You have been busy this summer, and I know that the drought has been a little discouraging. I can't believe that you and your Panoply Sisters are already looking ahead to Christmas, but it's definitely time to get started! I'm impressed with your planking ability: You are a rockstar, My Friend! You'll be at three minutes in no time! I hope you have a happy, healthy, and rainy fall. :D

  13. Wow, baby J is 3 already? Looks like a very fun birthday party. She is so adorable. Rita, you are so impressive with your planking. So glad you and Mr. P. got to get away a little. PawPaw tree fruit is new to me. I learned something new. The Panoply sisters are always on the hunt. Looks like lots of fun decor you found. I know you have been beside yourself this summer. It's been so darn hot. Cheer for cooler temps.

  14. Rita I am so impressed with your 75 seconds of planking! You go girl! What fun for you and your sisters. I know you girls have been doing this for years but I'm sure you know time is short and we don't want to waste a moment of not being with our families. Both of mine are not around anymore and it saddens me. We used to do so many things together so I have those memories. Your little J is so precious. Love her dress up attitude. and with you going down the slide...she will remember that forever. My sister-in-law lived in Michigan and they had paw paws everytime we visited. There was even a town called paw paw just up the highway from Kalamazoo. Enjoy the lingerings of Summer as Fall is here before we know it. Time for college football and basketball on the heels of that. Go Mountaineers and Jayhawks. We have a much larger 'Big 12' this year.

  15. Rita, I am so impressed with your suspended plank…you will make the 3 minutes if I was a betting person! How can Baby J be 3 already? Time passes too quickly. We blink and they are no longer babies. I am glad that you and Mr. P had a little get away. I feel your pain about the drought! It rained all around us yesterday and we did not get one drop. I feel like we have been living in the desert this summer…oppressive heat, no rain, and windy conditions that make the first two even worse. Our garden and grass look baked. BTW, I have never heard of a PawPaw tree! You and the sisters have great fun! If ever I am near you, I have to stop and find the antique mall and your booths! Happy September, my friend!

  16. I’m impressed with the suspended plank of yours, Rita! I can’t believe that Jacqueline is three already! Isn’t she such a darling? I’d be sliding down having fun just like you at the party. You’ve really had a busy summer and now you’ll be styling your booth for Fall and Christmas. Btw, you did a good job on repairing poor St. Francis. Happy Fall to you!

  17. I just turned 72 on July 24th and slowed a bit. When I was diagnosed last winter with systemic sclerosis it has changed me a bit but still trying to enjoy life as much as possible. Always enjoyable to read what everyone is doing! Thanks for sharing!

  18. I’m very impressed with your plank! And as for little J, she is growing up so fast and is such a cutie. I’m sorry to hear of your heat and drought. We’ve had a crazy summer in Michigan, everything from heat, cold and windy.

  19. Rita, my comment is above as anonymous. I had problems getting it to respond correctly, oops!

  20. Well, I lost my comment. I hope I hit the publish button by mistake. Continuing on because I am exhausted from working in the yard all day. I guess it is the dancer in you that you are challenging yourself with the suspended plank. It looks scary! I enjoyed all your adventures. Great picture of you with your sisters.

  21. Rita-I am so impressed with your planking! You are inspiring me to go out and get more exercise! As always it is such fun following all your adventures and reading your tales of a traveling tote! Your Crape Myrtle is gorgeous and I am sure your lawn will recover once you get rain. We had the same thing with heat and drought, then finally got some well needed rain, but it has been dry again. Keep enjoying your adventures!

  22. Rita, like Mary I’m seriously impressed with the planking! Not only are you darling ( love the photo with the sisters!) but your buff, as well! How blessed you three are to have each other, in life and in your antique fun! Hoping your grass comes back, it’s been a brutal summer here at FrenchGardenHouse too, I’m currently praying over several favorite hydrangeas that are quite crispy. Wishing you a blessed weekend, xo Lidy
